Adult Counselling at Bright Space Therapy
Life is full of ups and downs, and there’s a huge range of emotions and experiences that comes with being human. For some difficulties, we feel equipped to move through them with the support of community and own abilities. At other times, these resources may not be available to us or we experience challenges that require extra help. Accessing support from an experienced professional can be valuable during these times.
Counselling at Bright Space Therapy provides a caring, non-judgemental space to work on the things that matter most to you. Sessions are guided by your needs, with a focus on checking in throughout treatment to clarify what you’re finding helpful and not helpful.
Benefits of Counselling
Counselling can help people learn new coping skills and strategies. It can also help people gain insight into their thoughts, feelings and past experiences to develop a better understanding of themselves. In this space, people can feel empowered to discover new ways of managing difficulties.
For a lot of people, what brings them to counselling is something they would like to ‘get rid of’. For example, wanting to get rid of anxiety or unhelpful patterns. During sessions, we’ll work towards reducing distressing symptoms whilst increasing the things in your life that bring meaning and joy.
People access counselling for help with a wide range of problems, such as:
- Anxiety
- Stress, worry and overwhelm
- Depression and low mood
- Feeling stuck, ‘shutdown’, or constantly in fight/flight
- Traumatic and disturbing experiences
- PTSD
- Experiencing difficult life transitions and changes such as job loss, chronic illness andrelationship changes
- Grief and loss
- Wanting to experience better mental health
- Parenting difficulties
- Relationship difficulties
My Counselling Approach
I work from a humanistic framework. This means that I believe people are inherently lovable and worthy. Humanistic therapists believe that people naturally gravitate towards healing and growth, however this may become blocked due to different life experiences and environments that don’t provide the right support. As a counsellor, I see my role as providing the environment + support that helps you tap into your natural strengths and feel empowered. I’m also practical, and make an effort to translate big ideas and abstract topics into concrete takeaways. I know that overwhelming feeling of walking away from support thinking ‘okay that was great but…what do I do now?’. I believe in the power of building momentum and confidence with repeated, achievable steps. To me, one of the best parts of counselling is getting to see different parts of yourself and practice new ways of thinking and doing things. We’re often our own worst critics, and the benefit of having someone highlight our strengths, efforts and possibilities is really special.
